Granbury ISD officially announced on July 17 the appointment of Sonny Galindo as the interim head football coach and boy’s athletic coordinator at Granbury High School for the 2023-24 school year. Galindo has been the GHS defensive coordinator since 2016.
Galindo takes over for Chad Zschiesche, who stepped down from his position to pursue other career opportunities on June 29. Galindo has 25 years of experience as a coach, with stops at Hamilton, Saginaw and Weatherford High School before coming to Granbury. During his career, Galindo has been to the postseason 11 times.
“I’d like to thank Dr. Jeremy Glenn and Dwight Butler for this opportunity. I am so thankful and excited to continue leading these great young men next season,” Galindo said. “I look forward to working with a tremendous staff and school district and being involved in this outstanding community.”
During his 25-year career, Galindo has been a coordinator on both offense and defense, mostly as a defensive coordinator at the 4-6A levels for much of the last 14 years. He got his career started at Hamilton in 1998 and was quickly elevated to defensive coordinator from 2002-09. During his time at Hamilton, Galindo and the Bulldogs made the playoffs six seasons. From 2009-15, Galindo coached at Saginaw where he was an offensive coordinator for his first season and defensive coordinator for the last four seasons, helping guide the Rough Riders to four postseason berths. He then spent one season at Weatherford before arriving in Granbury.
“Coach Galindo is a tremendous leader and coach,” GISD Athletic Director Dwight Butler said. “Coach Galindo has made a career of coaching winning programs and building relationships with his players, staff, parents, and community members. We are excited about the future of the Granbury football program under Coach Galindo’s direction.”
In addition to football, Galindo spent 14 years as the head track coach while at Hamilton and Saginaw. He has also served as a softball and volleyball coach in his career. Galindo has excelled as a teacher as well, having been named Hamitlon’s High School Teacher of the Year in 2003 and Granbury High School Teacher of the Year in 2019.
Galindo earned a bachelor of science from Tarleton State University and a master’s from Stephen F. Austin.
