GRANBURY ISD DISTRICT ADVISORY COUNCIL

March 31, 2022 – 4:45 PM – Zoom

The Granbury ISD District Advisory Council met via Zoom on March 31, 2022, at 4:46pm. The meeting was convened by assistant superintendent Jimmy Dawson.

Assistant Superintendent Update

Assistant superintendent Jimmy Dawson presented information on the May bond initiative. Proposals were developed last fall by the Long Range Planning Committee after studying demographic, financial, and architectural. The LRPC resolution was adopted 83-0 by the committee and then accepted by school board to send to district voters for consideration.  The proposal includes:  a new high school; a combined junior high school; renovations for six elementary schools and two early learning academies; a new transportation hub on the eastern side of the district plus elementary traffic loops; non-facility program changes.  Town halls and other community presentations are underway.

Assistant superintendent Tammy Clark congratulated everyone on benchmark data and challenged the group to use the data to help student performance on upcoming state exams. She discussed changes to this year’s state accountability ratings.  Clark also asked that requests for summer projects, including painting, be reported to campus leadership. The hiring season is underway for next school year. In addition, summer school information will be distributed soon.

Chief Financial Officer Emmett Whitefield discussed summer project and painting requests.

Human Resources Update

Dawson announced that the Employee Recognition Banquet will be Wednesday, May 4 at Granbury Middle School.

Curriculum Update

Stacie Brown, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, stated that June 1-2 are contract days for district-wide professional development for curriculum and content areas; a speaker will kick off the two days, and Summer Launch will conclude the meetings on June 2.  A district professional development committee, with input from principals and instructional specialists, has built a summer training program with registration open April 4-29. Additional information from sessions at Region 11 Education Service Center will also be included.

College, Career & Military Readiness (CCMR) Update

Todd Gibson, Director of Career and Technical Education, reported that a CCMR student data tracker is available for progress of each individual student.  New courses include algebraic reasoning that will provide students with a fourth math credit.  Dual enrollment classes provide a new way for students to earn college credit; current offerings include three math classes and one CTE class, but these will expand next school year to include physics.  275 students have been enrolled in DE classes this school year; this will likely expand by 100 students next school year.  In addition, CTE is adding an industry-based certification in floral design.

Jeremy Ross, principal of Granbury High School, stated that a dual credit music appreciation, psychology, and sociology classes will be offered next school year or in the near future.  A developmental reading and writing class will be available for some students needing a fourth English credit; Texas College Bridge has also been available for math.

Technology Update

Brent Wilson, Director of Technology, stated that the district will be implementing federal standards in order to protect student information. Staff user accounts will have a screen lock feature on computers that will require the user to log back into their computer after 15 minutes of idleness or non-use.  Always-on and secure devices such as SMART Boards and print stations will not be included.

Minutes of the meeting will be posted on the district website.  The council heard a presentation from the Paluxy River Children’s Advocacy Center and will be considering health curriculum for recommendations to the school board.  There will be a subcommittee on physical activity.  Elizabeth Perchard is the SHAC coordinator, and the council will meet four times during the school year to make recommendations to the school board.

Dr. Glenn reported that Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER) funds are being released.  He indicated that GISD was looking about $10 million over the next three years.  Dr. Glenn said that the Texas Education Agency expected some instructional lag among students due to the pandemic.  Funds will help with accelerated learning and intervention.

Wes Jones, human resources director, updated the DAC on COVID testing with nurses testing over 1,800 students and staff. He discussed staff retirements and the upcoming hiring season.

Margaret Rodriquez, principal for the upcoming GISD summer school, said that over 700 students in grades K-8 are slotted for summer school, which will be held 27 days from 7:30-11:30am on Monday-Thursday at Granbury High School. Summer school will include high school acceleration and credit recovery as well as PK and K bilingual students. About 60 teachers are needed.  There will be End of Course testing at the end of June.  Holmgreen mentioned that breakfast, lunch, and transportation will be provided.

Danielle Parsons, technology director, discussed the upcoming Teach 4 Greatness professional development sessions.

Stacie Brown, new curriculum director, discussed professional development opportunities during the summer.  There are 99 opportunities available for registration through Eduphoria. Brown mentioned the ESSER funding.

Trisha Suitt, assistant director of curriculum, reported on federal funding. GISD received $1.4 million for Title I programs this school year. These include instructional specialists, tutoring, supplies and materials to increase rigor, homeless supplies, Edgenuity, some professional development, parent involvement activities, and Saturday school at Baccus Elementary. Title II funds totaling $230,000 to pay for professional development and instructional coaching as well as related materials.  Title III funds of $61,000 were utilized for second-language learners for bilingual paraprofessionals as well as ESL/bilingual instructional materials. Title IV funds of $99,000 are for safe and healthy school and well-rounded education; the majority goes to the Communities in Schools partnership for social workers at GHS and Baccus. The department is beginning to plan for next school year.

Brown reported that the curriculum department is in the data-gathering phase for the 2021-22 school year. A survey will be distributed to determine community and school needs for the ESSER funds.

Jimmy Dawson, career and technical education director, reports that CTE enrollment has grown 26% over the past five years in the 17 programs of study. Following a recent program evaluation, new areas of study include early learning, web design, and aviation/flight. A new airplane has been secured for the aviation program, and meeting are being held with Tarrant County College about a possible memorandum of understanding about GHS students transitioning into a TCC pilot program. New technical dual credit courses through Weatherford College are being offered in welding and accounting; next year, classes will also include child development. To help with College Career Military Readiness (CCMR), GHS will include year-long dual enrollment classes in math through OnRamps offered through the University of Texas at Austin; students have the option to accept the college credit. Dawson will be working with AVID campuses and teachers on aligning with AVID and GISD goals.

Holmgreen discussed upcoming STAAR exams in May 2021. Students will receive raw scores, and the district will receive data on CCMR but district and campuses will not receive state accountability ratings.  High school students must still pass End of Course exams for graduation.

He thanked nurses for their work in administering the tests.  During the pandemic, substitutes are in need for teacher absences; the HR department has 40 new subs but is seeking more.
