Area Spelling Bee - March 10, 2010

Christian McClain, a fifth grader at Acton Elementary School, won the 2010 Area Spelling Bee held March 10, 2010. It was McClain’s second consecutive win at the area competition.

The contest pitted campus-level winners from seven Granbury campuses, and McClain emerged the victor after nine rounds. Runner-up for the contest was Matt Hines, an eighth grader at Granbury Middle School. Other competitors were: Tiara Dobs, Brawner Intermediate School; Sydney Carpenter, Acton Middle School; Michael Golba, Oak Wood School; Donna Molder, Mambrino School; and Chris Nestle, Baccus Elementary School.

As the Hood County area champion, McClain will advance to the Star-Telegram Regional Spelling Bee scheduled for March 23 at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth. That contest will feature 33 contestants who won at the area level. The regional winner will have an opportunity to compete at the national competition to be held in Washington, D.C. in May.

The campus and district spelling bees were open to all students under the age of sixteen who had not passed beyond the eighth grade.
