Area Spelling Bee - February 17, 2009

Christian McClain, a fourth grader at Oak Woods Intermediate School, won the 2009 District Spelling Bee held on February 17, 2009. The contest pitted campus-level winners from Granbury intermediate and middle schools, and McClain emerged the victor after four rounds.

Runner-up for the contest was Tommy Wallace, a fifth grader at Mambrino School. Other competitors were: Matt Hines, a seventh grader at Granbury Middle School; Nathaniel Milson, an eighth grader at Acton Middle School; and Bryten Otting, a fifth grader at Brawner Intermediate School.

As the representative of Granbury ISD, McClain will advance to the Star-Telegram Regional Spelling Bee, which will be held on March 24, 2009, at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth. That contest will feature 33 contestants who won at the area level. The regional winner will have an opportunity to compete at the national competition to be held in Washington, D.C. in May.

Sponsored by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the campus and district spelling bees were open to all students under the age of sixteen who had not passed beyond the eighth grade.
