Area Spelling Bee - February 21, 2008

Stefanie Mundhenk, an eighth grader at Granbury Middle School, won the 2008 District Spelling Bee held on February 21, 2008. This marked the third time that Mundhenk won the competition, as she placed first last year and in 2005 as a fifth grader at Brawner Intermediate School.

The contest pitted campus-level winners from five schools, and Mundhenk emerged the victor after eight rounds. Runner-up for the contest was Paige Holt, a seventh grader at Acton Middle School. Other competitors were: Raney Cortez, a fifth grader at Oak Woods Intermediate School; Adam Felan, a fifth grader at Brawner Intermediate School; and Tommy Wallace, a fourth grader at Mambrino School.

As the representative of Granbury ISD, Mundhenk will advance to the Star-Telegram Regional Spelling Bee, which will be held on March 3, 2008, at the Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth. That contest will feature 33 contestants who won at the area level. The regional winner will have an opportunity to compete at the national competition to be held in Washington, D.C. in May.

Sponsored by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the campus and district spelling bees were open to all students under the age of sixteen who had not passed beyond the eighth grade.Pictured at left are: (top) Mundhenk and (bottom) the spelling bee participants: (right to left) Adam Felan, Tommy Wallace, Stefanie Mundhenk, Paige Holt, and Raney Cortez.
