Discussion of Issues
Sharon Wiliams the Curriculum Director for GISD presented about the following issues -
- Census 2020 - The results of the 2020 census will have a big impact on GISD and the Health Department. It's important to encourage all families in the school district to report and give feedback to the census. A worry is that families that are here illegally and not citizens will not fill out the census. The census will not ask for citizenship information.
- GISD PreK Campus - Emma Roberson Elementary is being converted into a Early Learning Center for students that are 4 years of age through PreK. This campus will be open to children of GISD Employees as well as qualifying families in the district. Classes will have an 18:2 classroom ratio. Students will have classes in “experience rooms” and will rotate through these rooms every 2 weeks. These rooms will have different themes such as farm, zoo, and camping. The Early Learning Center is planned to open for the 2020/2021 school year.
- Mental Health First Aid Summer Training - Pecan Valley will be offering a summer training to teachers on how to act and respond to someone dealing with crisis, outcries, and panic attacks. This will be an 8 hour training. This goal of this training is not to diagnose, but to apply the tools of mental first aid to help a person get the care needed.
- Daycare opening for GISD Employee Children - A daycare facility will be offered to GISD employees starting 2020/2021 school year. Children ages 6 weeks - 3 years will be allowed to attend. The daycare is located at the old Stars Building next to Acton Elementary. The Daycare will have approximately 78 children. The topic will be presented to the School Board for approval on February 17, 2021.
- Stop the Bleed - This annual training required by the State of Texas. A law passed in January 2020 which will allow the GISD nurses to become Stop the Bleed trainers and train district employees.
Jeff Hastings presented about GISD Safety -
- Officer Hastings did an odor demonstration with Annie the GISD drug dog. Annie is also part of the SWAT Team.
- Officer Hastings went over security at all campuses. Each elementary campus has a security office. The high school and both middle schools have constables on campus.
- GISD has applied for a state grant which will help put more security cameras in schools.
- GISD is part of the school marshall program. Unknown staff members may be armed. Those staff members attend training to serve in that position.
Lauren Bruner GISD Health Coordinator presented-
- Coronavirus - no protocols have been given by CDC. Threat of Coronavirus spreading in the United States is low. Travel restrictions in place to China. Will keep monitoring and follow guidelines and protocols if given by CDC.

In order to be complaint with this code, GISD Counselors have teamed up with STARRY Counseling from Stephenville, The Paluxy River Children’s Advocacy Center, and the Brazos Pregnancy Clinic to formulate a presentation for the students at the secondary level. This presentation was presented at STARS High School and Crossland Ninth Grade Center to the students. Both the staff and the students had excellent feedback regarding the presentation. The agencies established a good rapport with the groups and build trust with the student which enabled the students to ask very important questions. The students were appreciative to have the agencies talk to them regarding this issue. There will be a parent presentation put together next year before the student presentation is held.

GISD Wellness Plan Report
Linda Williams, Director of Support Services, presented information on the GISD Wellness Plan that is currently being updated by Linda Williams, Sharon Williams, and Misty Walters. The following is a summary of the presentation and information regarding the GISD Wellness Plan.
Every school/local education agency that participates in the National School Lunch Program and/or the School Breakfast Program is required to establish a local school wellness policy that is approved by the board of trustees.
The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 expands the scope of local school wellness policies; brings in additional stakeholders in its development, implementation and review; and requires public updates on the content and implementation of the wellness policies. The intent is to strengthen local school wellness policies so they become useful tools in evaluating, establishing, and maintaining healthy school environments, and to make clear to the public (including parents, students, and others in the community) about the content and implementation of local school wellness policies.
Local wellness policies must include, at a minimum, goals for nutrition education, physical activity, and other school-based activities that promote student wellness, as well as nutrition guidelines to promote student health and reduce childhood obesity for all foods available on each school campus.
As of School Year 2006-2007, all districts were required to establish a local school wellness policy.
For School Year 2015-2016, local educational agencies are encouraged to continue reviewing and assessing their local wellness policies and implementing the new requirements. State agencies will hold local education agencies accountable for local school wellness policy implementation, assessment, and public updates during the Child Nutrition Administrative Review.
