Elementary Physical Fitness

Janie Chiles, PE teacher at Acton Elementary, gave a presentation in regards to the elementary PE program in GISD.  With the new BOND, GISD has been able to build two new gyms for the elementary campuses, Acton Elementary and Emma Roberson.  Throughout the district many of the schools participate in Miler’s Club and other programs such as Family Fitness Nights, Cross Fit, Archery, and Dance Teams.  Some schools encourage GHS students that are involved in sports to come to the elementary campuses to have Sports Fridays which presents good role modeling for the students.  Students beginning in 3rd grade participate in the Fitness Gram.  PE teachers are attending many different professional development opportunities that are promoting the use of technology in the PE setting.

Secondary Fitness and Wellness

Misty Walters gave a report from the parent’s perspective for the Middle School program at AMS.  The 6th grade boys have engaged in flag football and 3 on 3 basketball tournaments which have incorporated teaching the skills of each sport.  The teacher for the class sends out a weekly progress report with an informational letter to the parents.  Students are required to keep a physical activity log for the week.  They must do 25 sit-ups and 25 push-ups outside of class time for a grade.  One day a week they also run on the track.

Other Discussions

1.      Parents would like to see communication from the Fitness and Wellness teachers from both AMS and GMS.  They would also like information from the coaches in regards to 7th and 8th grade athletics.

2.      It was suggested that the High School Trainers present to our subcommittee the protocol for concussions for school athletics.  This will be arranged for our follow up meeting on April 22, 2016.

3.      Dr. Laura Power made reference to a program called Make a Splash Foundation.  The USA swimming foundation partners with local organizations such as the YMCA to provide swim lessons and water safety education.

4.      The subcommittee decided to meet again after the April 22, School Health Advisory Council meeting.

Meeting was called to order by Misty Walters.
